The Bombay High Court today directed the joint commissioner of police (Thane) to initiate action towards removal of abandoned and unattended cars parked on roads in Thane district.
A division bench of Justices P V Hardas and Revati Dere directed the Thane traffic police to make a statement before it on the next date of hearing that they will take appropriate action against the unattended vehicles under the Motor Vehicles Act.
The bench was hearing a public interest litigation filed by former mayor of Thane Ashok Vaity stating that vehicles parked and then abandoned on service roads adjoining the eastern express highway and main roads in Thane are causing obstruction to traffic.
The PIL states that the traffic police can take action under section 127 of the Motor Vehicles Act but nothing is done.
The bench directed prosecutor Aruna Kamat Pai to take instructions from the Thane traffic police and sought a statement from the joint commissioner of traffic police that action would be taken.
The matter would be heard next week.
