The Madras High Court has directed the state government to place before it within three weeks the government order with regard to allocation of funds for construction of proposed two new law colleges.
The First Bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R. Mahadeven, went through the affidavit filed by the Director of Legal Studies on Friday.
The bench said "The affidavit filed by the Director of Legal Studies shows that the revised budget of Rs.117.30 crore has been proposed on the basis of 2016-2017 rates on 06/07/2016 and Public Works and finance department have agreed to proposals."
"The issue of GO is awaited, which is to be issued shortly. Learned Government pleader requests for three weeks of time for issuance of GO.It should be ensured that the GO is placed before us on the next date along with the time-line for further work."
The bench after directing the government to issue the GO within a period of three weeks posted the matter for further hearing to September 9.
Following a clash between two groups of students of Law College in the High Court premises a few years ago, the Justice Shanmugam Committee was appointed to make recommendations and it was proposed to shift the Law College from the present HC premises to some other place.
Out of the four places, government identified two places-- one at Pattarai in Thiruvallur District, and another one at Pudupakkam village in Kancheepuram District.
