HC rejects plea for ban on release of 'Finding Fanny'

The Delhi High Court today refused to entertain a plea seeking a ban on the release of director Homi Adajania's new movie "Finding Fanny" starring Deepika Padukone and Arjun Kapoor.
The petition had claimed that the use of the word 'fanny' in the film's title and songs was vulgar since it has a sexually explicit meaning in the dictionary and thus its usage will hurt the sentiments of the people.
A bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw dismissed the plea saying "It does not warrant interference from this court."
"If you look at the dictionary meaning of your name, it too may have a different meanings", the court said to the counsel for petitioner.

During the brief proceedings, Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain, appearing for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, said the censor board had already cleared the movie and added that the word in question is an American slang.
"It is not logical to draw inference about the content of the film by looking at the title alone,' the ASG said and sought dismissal of the PIL.

The plea had also challenged the U/A certificate given to the movie which will hit theatres across the country on September 12.
The film also stars Naseeruddin Shah, Dimple Kapadia and Pankaj Kapoor.
The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Nandini Tiwari and NGO Jai Jagriti Foundation had said the word "fanny" was a slang and should be removed from the movie, its songs, posters and banners.

The petitioner, who is a mother of a 4-year-old, had said allowing such words in films and television will affect the children's minds.
Questioning the U/A certificate, the plea had sought a ban on the film's release and a direction to the filmmakers to delete the word "fanny" from the movie, songs and posters.
