A bench of justices R M Savant and Sadhana Jadhav ordered the Centre to file an affidavit detailing its steps taken to regulate entry to the airport and access to its vicinity.
The court gave the direction while hearing a plea by city resident Yashwant Shenoy, alleging lax security arrangements in and around the domestic and international terminals of the airport here.
The plea also claimed the government and the airport authorities were grossly unprepared to tackle potential security breaches and avert terror attacks.
Apart from the Union government, the court also directed the Airport Authority of India (AAI), Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and CISF to submit details of the number of labourers appointed at the airport on contract basis.
"This is a serious issue. Do the authorities check the credentials of each and every contract labourer employed in and around the airport?" Justice Savant asked, while slating the petition for further hearing after four weeks.
