The Delhi High Court sought responses of the AAP government and the Mandoli Jail authorities on Friday on complaints of corruption and inhuman treatment meted out to prisoners.

A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice A J Bhambhani initiated a public interest litigation (PIL) on its own by taking cognisance of the complaints made to it by certain inmates of Mandoli Jail.

The court listed the matter for further hearing on July 5.

The PIL, which highlighted alleged corrupt practices in Mandoli jail no. 12, stated that the inmates had complained about atrocities and corruption against the jail authorities when an additional sessions judge had visited the prison.

They had claimed that they were beaten up and punished for making corruption allegations, the petition stated.

After their complaints, two inmates were shifted from Mandoli Jail to Tihar Jail.

One of the complainant prisoners has stated that in the kitchen of jail no. 12, the affluent inmates get food after giving money to the jail officials and the latter consume the food meant for the inmates.

He has also accused the jail officials in all the wards of corruption.

Another inmate has claimed that there is no jail manual in the library of jail no. 12.
