HC to hear NRAI plea on May 14

The Delhi High Court would hear on May 14 the plea of National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) against its single judge bench order quashing the nomination of eight members in the general body of the sports body.
A bench of justices S Ravindra Bhat and Najmi Waziri, after hearing brief arguments, adjourned the case to May 14.
NRAI has challenged the decision of the single judge who had allowed the plea of Olympic Silver medallist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore that the election was a sham and be quashed as he was denied an opportunity to contest.
"No election which has been held after depriving the persons desirous of contesting the chance to contest can be held to be a valid election and cannot be given any recognition," the court had said, adding that instead of election, selection process was adopted.

The single judge had rapped NRAI and its President Raninder Singh for depriving the ace shooter, who had won a silver medal in shooting in the 2004 Athens Olympics, the opportunity to contest the election.
NRAI was restrained from giving effect to the elections held on 6th April, the court had said.

It, however, had given the sports body the liberty to hold fresh elections in accordance with the law.
The decision taken by the NRAI President to get himself authorised to nominate people of his own choice was clearly aimed at denying the members desirous of contesting the election the opportunity to avail of their right to contest the election, it had said.

NRAI has a general body comprising four representatives from its life members of its unit called 'Wild Life Association of India' and four representatives of annual members of another unit called 'Shooters Association of India'.
NRAI selects teams or contingents for international shooting competitions.
