Holi was celebrated across Uttar Pradesh today with traditional fervour and gaiety as people cutting across religious lines smeared colours on each other exchanged gretings.
No untoward incident was reported from any part of the state, police said.
Markets in the capital city remained closed on the occasion.
The state government had already directed the civil and police officials to take all steps necessary to ensure a peaceful holi.
In a video conferencing with senior officials including divisional commissioners, district magistrates, IGs, DIGs and SPs, Principal Secretary (Home) Devashsish Panda and DGP Javeed Ahmed directed them to take necessary precautions to ensure that festivities were observed in a peaceful manner.
The officials were also asked to take pre-emptive steps in view of rivalry-related incidents in the recent panchayat elections, an official spokesman said.
