Hr Cabinet approves steep hike in fines for traffic violations

The Haryana Cabinet today approved a steep hike in fines for various traffic offences like driving without a licence, not giving way to an ambulance and driving by a minor etc to Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000.
The steep hike in fines, presently pegged between Rs 300 and Rs 3,000, was approved in a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister M L Khattar as part of amendments in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
The fine for not providing smooth passage to an ambulance carrying a patient would be Rs 2,000, but a subsequent offence will cost a fine of Rs 5,000, an official spokesman said.
The compounding fee for driving without a licence would be Rs 1,000 (Rs 300 at present) and Rs 2,000 for the second offence, he said.
Similarly, the driving by a minor would attract a fine of Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000 for the subsequent offence.
Carrying goods on passenger vehicle would attract a fine of Rs 2,000 and on a subsequent offence, the penalty would be Rs 5,000.
Similarly, running away from the accident spot would attract a fine of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 for the first and second offences respectively, the official said.
The compounding fee fixed for driving a vehicle without high security registration plate would be Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 for the subsequent offence respectively, he said.
A driver using vehicle in contravention of the conditions of learning license would attract compounding fee of Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000 for first and second offences respectively, the official said.
A vehicle carrying overload of up to 25 per cent of the permissible capacity would attract minimum fine of Rs 2,000 and an additional amount of Rs 1,000 per tonne of excess load, together with the liability to pay charges for offloading of excess load, he said.
Similarly, a vehicle carrying overload above 25 per cent of the permissible capacity would attract a fine of Rs 5,000 and an additional amount of Rs 2,000 per tonne of excess load, together with the liability to pay charges for offloading of the excess load, he added.
