District Judge P S Teji held Gandhi Nagar resident Parveen Garg and his three family members, including his mother Kamla Devi and two younger brothers, guilty of abetting the suicide of Rajni who was married to Parveen in 2007.
"I hold all the accused persons, namely, Parveen Garg, Anand, Krishan Aggarwal and Kamla Devi guilty of offences punishable under sections 498-A (subjecting a married woman to cruelty), 306 (abetment of suicide) and 34 (common intention) of IPC and convict them thereunder," the judge said.
Besides the seven-year jail term, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh on Parveen.
The court, however, showed leniency while awarding sentence to Anand, Krishan and their mother Kamla Devi.
"In my view, convict Anand and Krishan Aggarwal are required in the family to look after their aged mother i.E. convict Kamla Devi and minor children of deceased," the court said while awarding three-year jail to Anand and Krishan.
