The officials, associated with Income Tax Employees Federation (ITEF) and Income Tax Gazetted Officer Association (ITGOA), held a protest outside Income Tax office at Hapur Chungi here.
ITGOA vice president A K Singh said that the department was facing "acute" shortage of officers and around 500 vacant posts of I-T assistant commissioners were lying vacant due to which officers are overburdened.
"The department has given nod to promote and fill only 180 vacant posts which is insufficient and will not ease the burden of officers," Singh said.
In place of appointing regular staff, the department has resorted to out-sourcing of man power, Singh said.
Over 50,000 employees of the I-T department today went on a day-long countrywide strike to press the government for redressal of their service-related demands.
Officials of the striking unions said no work was conducted at these offices all day and the next plan of action will be decided on October 11.
The main tax office at the Civic Centre building in New Delhi wore a near-deserted look even as striking employees were seen staging protests in the compound.
"We are meeting again on October 11 to decide the future course of action," ITEF President A K Kanojia said.
