The International Labour Organisation (ILO) will send a high-level mission to Qatar to identify immediate and long-term plan of actions for improving the working condition of Nepalese migrant workers there.
The international organisation will send a delegation to initiate dialogue with Qatari authorities on the issue, ILO's Asia Pacific region Director Yoshiteru Uramoto said during his meeting with Prime Minister Sushil Koirala yesterday.
He said improving the working conditions of migrant workers from Nepal is high on its agenda, a statement issued by the organisation here said.
Uramoto, who concluded his three-day visit to Nepal yesterday, highlighted the key initiatives taken by the organisation in this regard.
Uramoto suggested that ratifying additional ILO Conventions on freedom of association, social security and domestic work, would help Nepal work with migrant-receiving countries in dealing with the problems of migrant workers.
He said Nepal should include labour migration on the agenda for South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit being held in the country in November.
During the meeting with Koirala, he discussed the rising number of fatal accidents involving Nepalese migrant workers.
He also discussed possible ILO intervention in promoting safe migration, the opportunities presented by globalisation, and the role of SAARC and the ASEAN member states.
He conveyed his best wishes for a successful transition of Nepal into a stable, peaceful, democratic and prosperous nation.
He also held talks with State Minister of Labour and Employment Tek Bahadur Gurung and Labour Secretary Suresh Man Shrestha.
