Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan today announced an end to the protocol of stopping traffic for VIPs in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province where his party is in power.
The announcement came after a 10-month-old girl died yesterday in Karachi, the capital of Sindh province, after her father was unable to reach a hospital in time due to security restrictions set up for Pakistan People's Party chairman Bilawal Bhutto's convoy.
"I announce to end all kinds of protocol to let VIPs pass in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. Traffic will not be stopped for any VIP protocol, even if it is the prime minister," Imran said.
"Those who are afraid of death should stay in their homes," he said at a public gathering in Lodhran district of Punjab where his party's candidate won a key by-election.
The death of the toddler Bisma was widely condemned with local media flashing footage of the hapless father running towards the hospital carrying the infant as all traffic was stopped for Bhutto.
He later told reporters that according to the doctors there, the life of the toddler could have been saved if she had arrived at the hospital at least 10 minutes earlier.
