Mohit Pathak has been admitted to a private hospital in the city with 40 per cent burns suffered in the attack last night at his apartment in Central Revenue Quarters at Anna Nagar, they said.
A helmet-wearing assailant threw acid on Pathak soon after he opened the door of his apartment.
"The assailant first threw the acid on Pathak's chest and when the victim ran inside his flat wriggling in pain, he followed and emptied the rest on his back, below the neck," a Police official told PTI, adding that he sustained 40 per cent burn injuries.
"A probe is on. The victim says he has no enemies or rivals. Though two other hockey players were staying with him, they were not present when the attack took place," the official said.
The assailant fled the scene of accident on a motorbike and took with him the empty acid bottle, he added.
