India-Lanka joint committee meeting on fisheries tomorrow

The first meeting of a joint committee between India and Sri Lanka is scheduled to be held tomorrow to discuss about institutionalising cooperation in the fisheries sector and address concerns of fishermen.
In January, both countries had agreed to set up a joint committee of senior fisheries officials to finalise the draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the field of fisheries.
"The first meeting of India-Sri Lanka joint committee is going to be held tomorrow. We will discuss about the draft MoU and other broader issues of cooperation between two countries," a senior Agriculture Ministry official told PTI.
India has signed MoUs with many countries like Vietnam in the fisheries sector but it has not yet signed such an agreement with the neighbouring nation, the official said.

"Finalising and signing of this MoU would institutionalise the cooperation in the fisheries sector and will also help resolving issues related to fishermen," the official said.
There is already a joint working group between the two nations under the External Affairs Ministry looking into fishermen issues. But the joint committee under the Agriculture Ministry will focus on developing fisheries sector with mutual cooperation.
