Innovation in waste management is essential to strengthen the Swachh Bharat Mission, G Satheesh Reddy, Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister and Director General, Missiles and Strategic Systems said today.
"As part of the Smart City Mission, many cities have been identified for development and in order to achieve complete success in the mission, we have to steadfastly find innovative solutions for waste management," he said here.
"With a paradigm shift in technologies, our efforts should be directed to evolve an environment-friendly solution to recycle and convert waste into useful products for re-use", Reddy said at the 'Swachh Bharat' drive organised by the DRDO labs in Hyderabad as part of the 'Swachch Bharat Mission'.
With new emerging forms and challenges posed by large chunks of e-waste, it is essential to promote and incentivise eco-friendly technologies, he said.
"It is our duty to contribute towards clean and healthy environment to ensure a sustainable environment for our future generations," Reddy was quoted as saying in a release.
According to the World Bank, cities worldwide generate around 1.3 billion tonnes of solid waste a year - an amount that is expected to reach 2.2 billion tonnes by 2025, driven mainly by low-income countries, it said.
"India is no exception, and around 62 million tonnes of waste is generated annually in the country at present and it is expected to rise to about 165 million tonnes in 2030," the release said.
Later, Reddy led a cleanliness drive in the areas surrounding the Midhani Bus Depot with active participation from over 300 volunteers, including M S R Prasad, Director of DRDL and Tessy Thomas, Director of ASL, and many senior scientists and staff of DRDO and defence PSUs here.
