Commissioner of Police A Amalraj said investigations led to the arrest of Manikandan, a college student and recovery of part of the jewellery.
He was produced before a local court today and remanded in 15 days judicial custody.
Manikandan told police they had got married in a registrar's office without informing their parents and hit upon the idea of stealing the jewellery to finance their wedded life.
Inspector Kabilan, posted in Tiruchirappalli, found his house burgled when he returned to Salem that day. His family members were away in Chennai at that time.
Kabilan was attached to the city police and had been transferred to Tiruchirappalli only last month.
