The progress of preparations for the upcoming South Asian Games and Sports Ministry's threat of derecognition of a couple of National Sports Federations under the controversial Sports Code will be among the important points to be discussed in the Annual General Body Meeting of Indian Olympic Association here tomorrow.
Preparations for the 12th South Asian Games, to be held here and in Shillong from February 5-16, have not been without problems, mostly infrastructure related, and some NSFs have expressed reservations about the facilities being offered in the two host venues.
Guwahati will host most of the events but there were reports of doubts about the feasibility of hosting hockey and shooting events in the Assam capital due to the huge sum required for renovating the facilities.
Out of the total 23 disciplines, Shillong was to host seven, including women's football, but it is now understood that badminton will be shifted to Guwahati as the the Badminton Association of India has expressed displeasure at the venue in the Meghalaya capital.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who is also president of the state Olympic Association, is likely to attend the AGM, which starts at 11am, as SAG preparations will be one of the main issues tomorrow.
Another important issue will the tussle between the Sports Ministry and the All India Tennis Association as well as Judo Federation of India. The Ministry has asked presidents of AITA and JFI to step down on the ground that they have been elected heads of these NSFs without serving a cooling-off period under the provisions of the controversial Sports Code.
AITA and JFI have stood their ground that they have not violated the Code, and the issue will be raised during the AGM tomorrow and the House will discuss how to tackle the issue.
Other items listed in the agenda for the meeting include confirmation of the minutes of the last AGM in Chennai last year, adoption of Secretary General's Annual Report, passing of audited statement of accounts of 2014-15 and budget of 2016-17 and appointment of auditors and fixing for their remuneration.
