Indian Women's Press Corps (IWPC) today condemned the attacks on journalists during clashes between student groups at Delhi University's Ramjas college.
"IWPC strongly condemn the attacks on journalists carried out at the North Campus yesterday. It is deeply concerned over the fact the media persons doing their duty in reporting events were singled out and attacked by the police," an official statement said.
"It has been just a year since journalists were assaulted by lawyers at the Patiala house courts. We are pained that a similar incident has now taken place in the Delhi University. We demand that an official enquiry be instituted to probe the incident and ensure that those responsible are identified and punished," it added.
Ramjas College yesterday became a flash point as students of Left-affiliated AISA and the RSS-backed ABVP armed with hockey sticks rained blows on each other, causing injuries to many venting their ire over an invitation to JNU student Umar Khalid, who was charged with sedition and Shehla Rashid to address a seminar.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) also condemned the violence, terming it "intolerance backed by State machinery".
"This is another shameful example of the violent intolerance backed by the State machinery of the RSS-BJP combine and its various wings against all forms of democratic protest, particularly in the universities," the party said in a statement.
