J&K govt admit shortfall in food grains

The Jammu and Kashmir government today said the state government is distributing food grains to 19.72 lakh families of the State as per the census of 2001, which results in marginal short-fall with respect to APL category to the extent of 5,950 MT per month.
Replying to a question by N C member Aijaz Ahmad Jan, Minister of State for CA&PD, Vikar Rasool Wani today informed the House that Centre is providing food grains to 18.02 lakh families of the State on the basis of projected population of year 2000 at a scale of 35 kg per family per month.
He said while as the government is distributing food grains to 19.72 lakh families of the State as per the census of 2001 which results in marginal short fall in respect of APL category to the extent of 5,950 MT per month.
The Minister informed that allocation of additional food grains has been taken up with the Centre where the Government demanded to provide the food grains quota to the State as per the census of 2011.
The Minister said as and when the Centre allocates the additional food grains by adopting the figure of census 2011, the department would be able to issue new ration cards to the families who emerged between the years 2001 to 2011.
