Everyday more than 1,780 traffic violation took place in Jammu and Kashmir, and 1.61 lakh people were fined for breaking rules in the first quarter of 2017, police said today.
Fines to the tune of Rs 2.88 crore were collected during the period, a senior officer of the traffic department said here.
In the first quarter, 1,390 vehicles were seized and 25,426 two-wheeler drivers were caught for not wearing helmets and 2,264 triple riding, he said.
Nearly 2,939 vehicles were challaned for overloading, the officer said, adding that for better traffic management, curbing traffic violations and ensuring safety, various measures were being taken.
Besides, on spot decisions were being taken in consultation with other stakeholders at cities and towns, he said.
The department to create awareness has been organizing traffic awareness camps and seminars, and special drives were launched to check offences, he said.
Keeping in view the condition of National Highway from Banihal to Nashri, a successful two-way plan was devised for smooth flow of light motor vehicles, he said.
During the period, road encroachments, on-road parking and other traffic ills were mitigated to a considerable level to ensure safe and smooth flow of traffic, the officer said.
He said that road diversions plans were formulated along construction zones to ensure smooth flow of traffic.
