Jammu and Kashmir saw a decrease in crime cases including crime against women in 2015 as compared to the preceding year.
"There is a decreasing trend in crime scenario in the state during 2015 as compared to previous year," the Crime Gazette 2015 released by Director General of Police (DGP) K Rajendra Kumar read.
It revealed that 25,390 cases were registered under various heads of crime during the 2015 against 26,907 cases during 2014.
It also shows decrease in crime against women as 3,535 cases were registered during the 2015 as against 3,714 during the corresponding year.
The crime gazette is first-hand information about the crime situation of the state and provides a vital database for strategy building and designing crime containment initiatives.
Speaking on the occasion, the DGP said that investigation of special crimes is a major responsibility of Jammu and Kashmir Crime Branch and the agency has to improve its working by adopting latest methods of investigation helping speedy disposal of crime cases.
He said the investigating agencies have to strengthen their mechanism and the civil society also has an important role to play in crime detection.
The DGP appreciated the efforts of State Crime Branch, saying that the initiative would help different wings of Jammu and Kashmir Police to assess and evaluate their performance and concentrate on improving their functioning in different fields of policing.
He asked for dedicated efforts by the investigating officers for speedy disposal of the cases, ensuring conviction of accused.
He said that failure of investigation tells upon the performance of an agency which needs to be focused.
