"SSP Jammu (Uttam Chand) has been transferred and another police officer (Vivek Gupta) has taken over the charge," an official spokesman said.
The government also posted senior IPS officer Ashkoor Wani as the DIG of Jammu range against an available vacancy.
The government decision comes in the wake of violent protests over removal of posters of pro-Khalistan leader late Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in Jammu on Wednesday.
While a police officer was injured on the first day of protests, a youth was killed in alleged police firing yesterday as the protests intensified in many parts of the state.
