Jayalalithaa hits out at DMK over non-completion of project

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa today hit out at arch rival DMK over not completing a key drinking water supply scheme aimed at benefiting the capital city of Chennai.
Intervening during a debate when DMK member M Subamaniam was speaking in the state Assembly, Jayalalithaa said the Veeranam water supply scheme was an example of DMK not implementing projects properly.
"Why was the Veeranam project, started in DMK regime (in the 1960s) not completed? Why did it remain incomplete? Were you not confident," she asked amid loud thumping of benches by AIADMK members.
She said though DMK came back to power, it did not proceed with the project.

"I successfully implemented the New Veeranam Scheme (conceived during the 2001-06 AIADMK rule) and Chennai city is still getting drinking water (under it)," she said.
On Metro Rail project, which the AIADMK had originally opposed while batting for Monorail, Jayalalithaa said she was "not denying" her opposition to the former "but the project nevertheless has been started."
"There was a compulsion that works have to be completed, so they were done. The project, which is underway, cannot be abruptly terminated. I have recognised the Centre's assistance for this project," she said.
Jayalalithaa had launched the first phase of Chennai Metro Rail between Alandur-Koyambedu stretch last year even as she had laid the foundation stone for the Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase-I Extension from Washermenpet to Thirvottiyur recently.
