The police is carrying out these tasks and in the backdrop of unfulfilled vacancies and retirement of thousands of personnel every year, a need had arisen for forming a force that would assist them in this, she said.

Making a suo motu statement in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Jayalalithaa announced the formation of Tamil Nadu Special Police Youth Force, allowing persons in the age group of 18-30 years join in it.

"The selected members will take up traffic management, crowd control, night patrols and driver jobs," she said.

Recruitment will be done based on advertisements and by District SPs. Persons who have passed Class X are eligible to appear for the selection, she said, adding that they will be paid a monthly stipend of Rs 7,500.

They will be entitled to essential commodities sold to police personnel on subsidised rates and after one year of satisfactory service, they are eligible to be absorbed into the state police force. A certain percentage of vacancies will be filled from this pool every year, she said.

Uniformed Services Recruitment Board will hold the selection process for this purpose and those who fail to make it to the police department, could serve in the same force till the age of 40 after which the government will help them with employment opportunities, she said.

10,000 persons will be recruited this financial year, exams for which will be held in December this year and they will be appointed in January 2013. Next year, the number will be increased to 15,000 and to 50,000 gradually in the coming years, she added.
