In a unique initiative, the police in Darbhanga zone in Bihar has introduced concept of "Jehangiri ghanti rpt ghanti (bell)" at the residence of officials which anybody in distress can press for action round-the-clock.
The idea has been introduced by new Inspector General of Police, Darbhanga zone, Arvind Pandey, in all the 10 districts falling within it.
The emergency bell is known as "Jehangiri ghanti" as it resembled the concept of "insaaf ka ghanta" (bell of justice) that was placed outside the palace of Mughal emperor Jehangir.
Pandey told PTI today that he got a similar bell with identification "Jehangiri bell" written below it fixed at his official residence on the auspicious occasion of Republic Day yesterday.
This is a dedicated call bell and to distinguish it from regular bell the name Jehangiri bell is written below it for easier identification, he added.
The Darbhanga IG said that he has issued order that similar bell has to be set up by all police officials from IG down to Inspector level.
The 10 districts falling under Darbhanga police zone are: Darbhanga, Madhubani, Samastipur, Purnea, Katihar, Kisangangj, Araria, Supual, Madhepura and Saharsa.
Pandey said that some identification word has to be there below the dedicated bell which need be compulsorily "Jehangiri bell".
He said the thought behind the step is to provide police help to distressed round-the-clock.
"The distressed need not wait for the office to start in the day or visit an officer on the day fixed for organising Janata Darbar for redressal of problem," he added.
The IG said that he would monitor implementation of the order regularly and act against officials found violating it.
