Gutierrez previously helmed the Golden Globe-nominated animated feature "The Book of Life" and the Emmy-winning TV series "El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera."
Most recently, he stepped into the virtual reality arena, directing Google Spotlight Stories' "Son of Jaguar", an animated short that combines Mexican wrestling with a heartfelt tale about tradition and family.
While the logline for the new film hasn't been revealed, the project was originally in the hands of Jason Segel and Drew Pearce, based on an original idea of Pearce's, The Hollywood Reporter said.
