Media should not have cosy relations with government as journalists are crusaders of truth, Press Council of India Chairman Justice (Retd) C K Prasad said today.
Speaking at a seminar on 'Ethical Journalism and role of Press Council' here, Prasad said he opposed the idea of cosy relations with government and authority.
"Journalists are crusaders of truth. You have to expose the wrongdoing in government.Conflict between government and media is good for democracy," Prasad added.
The PCI chairman said paid news was a menace and a reality. However, he said it was difficult to detect it.
"But as any other criminal activities, it also leaves a trace," he said.
Prasad said PCI stands for preserving the freedom of press and not for regulating its freedom.
Extending all support to the media in the country, he said "if your freedom is threatened, or independence is questioned, come before us. We will not betray you."
He also wanted journalists to report on the achievements and developments in the country.
Inaugurating the seminar, Governor P Sathasivam said social media also should come under the purview of the PCI.
"The irresponsible use of the social media deserves the attention of bodies like the Press Council, since the traditional media are also active on the social media," he said.
"Therefore, we should think of a media council that can check violations of ethical practices through stronger measures," he said.
