JSL commissions metal recovery unit in Odisha

Jindal Stainless Ltd (JSL) today said it has commissioned a metal recovery plant in association with Harsco Corporation at Jajpur in Odisha.
The company said it will help in reducing wastage by recovering trapped metal from the slag generated during the production of ferro chrome - a key raw material for making stainless steel.
"There was a loss of 5,000-6,000 tonnes metal per year, which will now be recovered through this novel technology," it added.
JSL said: "This plant is a part of multi-year contract to provide onsite material processing services by Harsco and will be located at the company's integrated stainless steel manufacturing facility at Jajpur, Odisha."

JSL Director - Operations, S Bhattacharya said, "This technology will help JSL to reduce the wastage of precious natural resources and will also help to reduce the amount of new metals and minerals, which would otherwise have been purchased..."
The company said it has made no upfront payment to Harsco for this 'long-term' deal, however, payments will be made to the global metal processing major in a phased manner.

In 2013, Harsco had set up a similar unit for Essar Steel in Hazira, Gujarat.
JSL's Jajpur unit consists of liquid slag dumping facility, rumbler unit for recovery of medium size metal pieces, crushing unit for recovery of small pieces of metal embedded in slag and a wet milling plant for segregating fine metallic pieces from slag.

Meanwhile, Jindal Stainless shares were trading 3.87 per cent up at Rs 37.55 apiece during afternoon session on the BSE.
