A meeting was convened by the Bar Council to deliberate on the "denial to Justice Patel of his rightful and deserved consideration of being appointed or elevated to the Supreme Court or as chief justice to a high court despite being the senior most judge in his parent High Court of Gujarat".
"The entire legal fraternity is anguished and greatly disturbed by the shaking of confidence in the collegium system, which has meted out such treatment to Justice Jayant Patel, who apparently has satisfactorily discharged his duties and functions as a judge," read a resolution passed at the meeting.
Patel was the acting chief justice of the Gujarat High Court before being shifted to the Karnataka High Court in February 2016.
The judge was reportedly unhappy that he was not made the chief justice of any court despite his seniority. The resignation on Monday came amid a reported decision of the SC collegium to transfer him to the Allahabad High Court.
Earlier in the day, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had said the government had not received any recommendation from the Supreme Court collegium on transferring Justice Patel from Karnataka to Allahabad.
