In a rarity, a documentary dedicated to Chanderi fabric and its weavers kickstarted the Amazon Indian Fashion Week today, and adding to the surprise was the presence of Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia, who has lent his voice to the film.
The documentary has been shot by designer Samant Chauhan.
The opening show, "Road to Chanderi", saw India's 16 leading designers coming together to show their interpretation of the traditional fabric.
Scindia represents a constituency in Madhya Pradesh, which is the birthplace of the traditional fabric.
He also walked the ramp towards the end of the show.
"Thank you everyone for joining me on the fabulous journey to a town that is close to my heart and to witness the magic of the weavers who are the heartbeat of a little place nestled in the heart of India called Chanderi," the 45-year-old leader said.
"This is just the beginning. I hope in the future Chanderi, the fabric, and Chanderi, the place, find her place among world's heritage sites," he added.
While Anita Dongre played with hues of cream and pale gold on skirts, shrugs and dresses, contemporarising Chanderi, Ragini Ahuja showcased chanderi jackets, crop tops and simple wearable trousers.
Aneeth Arora showed old cut shoulder light flowy tunics, in shades of white.
The collections shown by the designers exuded simplicity in classy and wearable colours like cream, pale yellow, grey, dull silver, peach and green.
Other designers who showcased their collections were Samant, Gaurav Jai Gupta, Karishma Shahani Khan, Payal Pratap, Rina Dhaka, Ruchira Sachdeva, Shruti Sancheti, Atsu Sekhose and Yogesh Chaudhary.
The first two days of the event for the ongoing edition are dedicated to the power of Indian handlooms and textiles.
AIFW is being held at the NSIC Grounds, Okhla here.
