The Kanchi Shankaracharya today condoled the death of DMK president M Karunanidhi, recalling his support to the famous Shaivite mutt on many occasions, senior BJP leader L Ganesan said.
Ganesan said he received a message from the pontiff, Vijayendra Saraswathi, "where I was asked to extend the mutt's condolences and sympathies with the family of Kalaignar, especially Mr M K Stalin," the son of the departed leader.
Karunanidhi was often supportive of the mutt, Ganesan said in a statement, quoting the the religious head.
Ganesan, who had already paid tributes to the mortal remains of Karunanidhi at Rajaji Hall, said he once again went there as a "representative" of the mutt and conveyed the message to Stalin.
The 94 year-old Karunanidhi died at a private hospital yesterday following a prolonged illness.
