The national secretary of the Shree Karni Sena, Suraj Pal Amu, was today detained by the Gurgaon police for questioning over the anti-"Padmaavat" violence in the city, police said.
Also, 31 agitators have been arrested so far for disturbing law and order after CrPC section 144, prohibiting assembly of more than four people, was imposed in Gurgaon in the wake of violence in the city, a senior police official said.
Yesterday, a school bus with 20-25 children inside it was attacked by a mob in Gurgaon, where hundreds of violent protestors descended on city roads torching buses, destroying public property and disrupting traffic to oppose the release of controversial film "Padmaavat".
The protests, led by the Karni Sena which has alleged distortion of history in the Sanjal Leela Bhansali helmed period drama, drew sharp criticism from various quarters.
"(Karni Sena's national secretary) Amu tried to go to meet his supporters at the M G road but he was detained from his residence at the posh DLF area in view of the law and order situation in Gurgaon," Gurgaon Police PRO Ravinder Kumar said.
He said of the 31 protestors arrested for violating prohibitory orders under section 144, 18 have been charged with torching Haryana roadways bus and pelting the school bus with stones yesterday.
"They have been sent to 14 days judicial custody," Kumar said.
Meanwhile, the Gurgaon police today dispersed a mob which was trying to protest outside the Raheja mall and the OMEX mall.
The protestors, in a group of 30-35 people, started assembled outside the malls around 7 pm and raised slogans against the screening of the film at Sohna, police said.
"They were thrashed and dispersed by the policemen who were deployed in heavy numbers outside both the malls, Kumar said, adding the situation was under control in Gurgaon.
