"I am very happy that your son Abhijit Mukherjee has been declared elected in the by-election (from the constituency).., which was vacated by you," he said in a faxed message to the President.
He also wished Abhijit Mukherjee a "brilliant public life and bright future."
Abhijit defeated his CPI-M rival Muzaffar Hussain in the bye-election to the Jangipur Lok Sabha constituency.
The October 10 bypoll was necessitated as the seat had fallen vacant after Pranab Mukherjee was elevated to the highest office of the country.
