Kendriya Vidyalaya schools have created a distinct identity for themselves in the educational sector and that is reflected in the large number of requests MPs receive for admission in them, Union Minister Ram Shankar Katheria said today.
"In the field of education, the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan has a strong identity. We experience it at the time of admissions.
"We MPs till recently received six coupons, but now it has been increased to 10," Katheria said as he referred to the move to allow an MP to recommend 10 students for admission into a Kendriya Vidyalaya against the earlier six.
Recalling his previous term as an MP, the minister of state for human resource development said that from Agra urban and rural area alone, he had received up to 450 request letters for admission into a Kendriya Vidyalaya.
Katheria was speaking at an event to mark KV Foundation Day. He also felicitated 120 teachers from across the country on the occassion with various awards.
KV Sangathan Commissioner Santosh Mal later told reporters that there are 1,122 Kendriya Vidyalayas at present in the country while three are functioning abroad.
He added that 54 new schools were sanctioned in March last year of which 32 have already opened.
