With China blocking India's bid at the UN to ban JeM chief Masood Azhar, Congress leader Salman Khurshid today critcised the Narendra Modi dispensation, saying Indian diplomacy needs to understand the Chinese "psyche" and "mere speeches" will not help.
He said the services of diplomats are not being used to the fullest and noted that they can do "what politicians can't".
"There is no point complaining about what the Chinese have done. We must understand the Chinese psyche. Have we understood the Chinese psyche to have expected them to have done something else? Our diplomacy is not taking into account the thinking of the other side.
"We have to change that thinking to meet our demands. But we can't do it overnight. We have to work on it and you cannot work on it unless you understand (the Chinese psyche)" Khurshid told PTI.
The former was speaking on the sidelines of the release of the Arabic translation of his play 'Sons of Babur' where several Arab League ambassadors were present at the event.
Taking a jibe at Modi, the Congress leader said it is "serious diplomacy".
"You make speeches and think you will succeed... You have to work on it. You have to work using diplomats. It is not just the work of politicians," he said, adding that expert diplomats on the topic are "not used".
"Politicians can't do what diplomats can. You have to use your diplomats. If you start thinking you can do everything yourself, then you can't," the former minister said.
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval was in China yesterday where he discussed Beijing's blocking of India's bid in the UN to ban Pakistan-based JeM chief Masood Azhar besides the border issues between the two countries and those related to counter terrorism.
