Police today claimed to have busted a notorious 'knock-knock' gang with the arrest of nine of their south India-based members from the national capital.
All the members hail from Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu and they were arrested while they were coming here after committing a series of thefts in Chandigarh.
The modus operandi of such gangs is to divert attention of occupants of a car by knocking on the window pane or throwing currency notes on the ground and then lift bags or other items from the car.
Police has also claimed that with their arrest, they have worked out several cases, including theft of diamonds worth Rs 1.5 crore in Daryaganj, theft of a US passport in Connaught Place area, cash worth Rs 1 lakh, credit cards, and important documents of an official of the Bureau of spiritual guru, the Dalai Lama.
Based on a tip-off that the gang members were to arrive at Mukarba Chowk in Delhi, an investigation team laid a trap near that place and nabbed them, police said, adding, stolen cash worth Rs 62,500, a mobile phone and bag containing documents were also recovered from their possession.
