Lamenting quality of education in government schools, Minister of State for HRD Upendra Kushwaha today said even the level of respect and affection between students and teachers has come down.
Speaking at the 56th Foundation Day of the NCERT, Kushwaha said he had studied in a government school but when he visits the same schools now as a minister, it would be dishonest to say the country has moved ahead in terms of quality of education.
"If we look at the country as a whole, we should except that in terms of quality of education especially in government schools, we have not moved forward," he said.
"The feeling of respect that students had for teachers and the feeling of affection that the latter had for their students has also vanished," the minister said.
Kushwaha asked NCERT officials present to keep the concerns of quality of education in their mind.
He emphasised that high quality education should reach people in the villages.
"We may have opened schools but what is the use of buildings where there is no education," Kushwaha said, adding huge challenges lie ahead. He also spoke about reducing the burden of school bags on children.
Later, when asked about his ministry's move to change the 'No Detention' provisions in RTE Act, Kushwaha said a final decision in this regard was yet to be taken.
"If needed we may even go to the Parliament. But a final decision has not been taken in this regard," the minister said.
