A child marriage which was reportedly set to be solemnised on April 21 at Deepalpur near here, was prevented by law enforcers today, officials said.
After receiving a tip-off, district authorities along with police reached Bhawani Nagar in the Banganga area and found that Devkiran Parmar, 19, had initiated steps to get married to a girl at Kagava village in Deepalpur on April 21, Women and Child Department's Project Officer Chitra Yadav said.
She said Devkiran's Aadhaar card revealed that he is 19-year-old and celebrated his birthday today, while the marriageable age for a male, as per Indian law, is 21 years, the project officer said.
"Devikiran gave us an undertaking that he won't tie the nuptial knot until he attains the age of 21," she said.
According to the Child Marriage Prohibition Act, 2006, the age of a male and female to enter wedlock is 21 years and 18 years respectively.
Violation of the act invites two years of rigorous imprisonment or a fine of upto Rs 1 lakh, or both.
