Lawyers of Agra and Aligarh Administrative Division have decided to gherao Taj Mahal to press for their long standing demand of a Allahabad High Court bench in the city.
The lawyers decided to raise the pitch for the movement at a convention that concluded here last evening.
A resolution passed at the convention stated that the lawyers from the two divisions would be on strike till August 26, when they will gherao the Taj Mahal to draw public attention toward the issue.
Vijai pal singh of the Action Committee said the Jaswant Singh Commission had recommended that such a bench was required considering the large number of cases from western UP districts, with litigants having to travel long distances to Allahabad.
A three-member commission headed by Jaswant Singh, a retired judge of the Supreme Court of India, was appointed in September 1981 to decide the location of a new bench in western Uttar Pradesh.
The Commission had suggested that Agra was the most appropriate place for such a bench.
Speakers at the convention said that the lawyers of Allahabad were opposing the creation of a new bench because of vested interests, though their point of view had been considered by the commission while preparing its report.
They said all that the lawyers of western UP wanted was the implementation of the recommendations of the commission.
