"The Politburo demands that the security apparatus be strengthened to protect life and property and all efforts must be made to identify and punish the guilty," CPI(M) said in a statement.
Noting the area, where the attack took place, is known for long to be "terrorist-infested", CPI(M) said it is "strange" that the police administration and BJP-led state government allegedly did not take adequate measures to protect life and property of people.
CPI national secretary D Raja also condemned the attack, saying the incident occurred despite Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh repeatedly talking on the issue of terrorism and the country being put on alert.
"The Home Minister keeps on talking about terrorism. The country has been put on alert, despite that it's happening. How our intelligence agencies are working?" he said.
14 people were killed today in Assam when a group of heavily-armed militants dressed in army fatigues and suspected of belonging to a Bodo separatist outfit opened indiscriminate fire and lobbed grenades at a crowded weekly market.
The militants came to the crowded weekly Balajan Tiniali market, about 12 km from Kokrajhar, in a van around noon and fired indiscriminately killing 12 persons on the spot and injuring more than 20 others.
