Concerns were raised in the Lok Sabha today over atrocities against women and children, including sexual assaults, with members demanding for expediting judicial process and implementation of the Nirbhaya scheme.
Initiating a debate on atrocities on women and children, P Karunakaran (CPI-M) said in a "male dominated society", the women and children have to bear the brunt of violence.
Listing out the incidents of rape and assaults, he said the country is facing a "dangerous situation" as the women and children are not safe anywhere, be it on streets or in school.
"Government should take a broader approach and take serious steps. The Nirbhaya scheme lacks proper implementation," he said.
Saying that law should be framed in a manner to combat sexual violence he said, official data suggests at the end of 2012, 85.1 per cent of rape cases is still awaiting trials.
"There should be no excuse for undue delay in justice especially when the crime is of serious nature," he said, adding that the menace of female foeticide should also be curbed.
He said there are instances of involvement of authorities, including police. "It is sad that women are brutally exploited," he said, adding there should be massive social awareness campaign.
He also demanded 33 per cent reservation for women in Police force and strict control on advertisement on women.
Bijoya Chakravarty (BJP) said it is a shame that there was a need for discussion of this issue in the 21st century.
M B Rajesh (CPI-M) and some other members of Left and Congress pointed that only few members from ruling party were present in the House when such a sensitive issue was being discussed.
