Issues ranging from the collapse of a bridge in Maharashtra claiming several lives to the Indo-Bangla land boundary agreement and the peace deal with NSCN(I-M) were raised in the Lok Sabha today.
Shiv Sena member Shrirang Barne raised the issue of the collapse of a British-era bridge over a swollen Savitri river on the Mumbai-Goa highway in Raigad district of Maharashtra, in which at least two persons drowned and 20 others were missing as two buses were swept away.
He warned that another bridge in Chiplun may face a similar fate and said though the government had started work to widen the highway since 2011, the pace of work in his constituency, between Panvel to Indapur, was slow and no work has been done for the last three years.
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury (Congress) said although a year has passed since the finalisation of India-Bangladesh Land Boundary Agreement, the enclave dewellers, who chose to reside in India, were being denied basic amenities.
Neiphiu Rio (Nagaland People's Front) said exactly a year has passed since the "historic peace deal" between the government and the NSCN(I-M) but there has been "no final settlement" as yet.
The former Nagaland Chief Minister said in 1997, a ceasefire agreement was signed between India and NSCN(I-M) and over 100 rounds of talks were held between them. He demanded urgent steps for a speedy solution to the problem.
Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress leader in Lok Sabha, said while government was celebrating 125th Anniversary of B R Amebdkar, copies of his literature was unavailable as the Maharashtra government has not given permission for reprint.
Kharge said since July 2014, there has been shortage of the literature and asked the government to give "high priority" to the issue.
At this, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said he will inform the concerned minister on the matter.
Satyapal Singh (BJP) demanded minimum wages for farmers, while his party MP Hukum Singh said over Rs 2,000 crore was yet to be paid to sugarcane farmers in several parts of western Uttar Pradesh.
Another BJP MP Satish Kumar Gautam said the compensation given by the Centre after the recent hailstorm in which large quantity of standing crops were destroyed, was yet to be disbursed by the farmers.
