The incident took place at Ulhasnagar town in the district, which had hit the headlines in early 1990s when Rinku Patil, a teen-age girl, was set on fire by a jilted lover during class 10th examination.
In the present case, the accused is identified as Amit Talreja, a street-food vendor.
According to police, he knew Neetu Jaisinghani (21), a compounder with local hospital, for the last four years, and had proposed marriage.
She initially agreed, but later changed her mind as she and her family learnt more about him, the police said.
She is being treated for severe burn injuries, while police have launched a manhunt for Talreja.
