Manju Sharma, a doctor, was found dead at her residence- cum-nursing home at Mall Road here on July 28.
The doctor's nephew, Amit Sharma alias Jimmy, a resident of Jalandhar's Gobind Nagar has been arrested in connection with the killing of the woman, the police said.
On the complaint of Manju's son Dr Deepak Sharma, who works in Karnal, the police had registered a case under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC, Inpsector General of Police (Jalandhar Zone) Arpit Shukla said.
A special investigation team under the supervision of Superintendent of Police (Investigation) Harpreet Singh Mander was formed, the officer said.
During investigations, it was found that Amit ran a travel agency in Jalandhar and had allegedly duped a number of people on the pretext of sending them abraod. Eventually, he ran out of work, Shukla said.
To repay his clients he had demanded Rs 2.5 lakh from his aunt, and when she refused, he killed her on July 28 night, he said.
Shukla claimed that the accused had confessed to his crime and also told the police that he got signatures of his aunt on some blank judicial papers, which have been recovered.
