Days after an RSS worker was slain and tension prevailed in the state capital, CPI(M), BJP and RSS leaders today held discussions to prevent any further escalation of political violence in the district.
The district-level talks were held a day after a peace meeting was called by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in which leaders of CPI(M), BJP and RSS took part.
The government had decided to hold three district-level meetings at Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam and Kannur, and an all-party meet on August 6.
CPI(M) and BJP leaders also decided to exercise restraint and avoid provocative statements.
If party cadres have some issues, district leaders should take the initiative to resolve them, CPI(M) district secretary Annavoor Nagappan and BJP district president Suresh Kumar told reporters after the meeting.
It was also decided not to target party offices and houses of cadres.
Such attacks should be condemned and cannot be accepted, they said.
BJP leaders also wanted the police to act impartially and said the party would not try to create any volatile situation.
"We will do everything to maintain peace," they said.
A similar meeting was underway at Kottayam, while the date for the one at Kannur has not yet been decided.
