Ratansingh Bhavarsingh Devra stole the jewellery from a shop in Zaveri Bazar in Mumbai where he worked as a salesman, said additional commissioner of police Makarand Ranade.
Devra got a duplicate key of the shop's safe made while he worked there, and began to steal jewellery pieces one by one, the police said.
This went on for the last six years. Police suspect that he had some accomplices.
He was planning to open his own jewellery shop, said senior inspector Madan Ballal of crime branch who interrogated Devra. Further probe is on.
