On August 18, the bodies of the two women were found inside different coaches of the Mahananda Express stationed at the yard of Shahdara railway station.
The women were identified as Maya Devi (55) and her daughter Nishu (34). They were residents of Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, the police said.
A senior police officer said Nishu died of injuries on head while her mother was strangulated to death. After the police started questioning locals, they found that the mother-daughter duo was accompanied to the train by a man on the evening of August 17.
Through CCTV footages, the police confirmed that he was present at Shahdara railway station when the duo was killed.
He was arrested last night from Anand Vihar bus terminal while he was trying to escape, the police said.
During interrogation, Pushpender told the police that he was fed up with the behaviour of his wife and her mother, the officer said, adding he also described the woman as "mentally unsound".
According to Parwaiz Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways), the accused said his wife and mother-in-law would quarrel with him and on many occasions leave home only to return late in the night.
He waited at Shahdara Railway Station and after sunset he started moving towards Seelampur side along the track. He found that the gate of a coach of a train stationed there was open.
The trio boarded the train and in two separate bogies of the train, he killed his wife and mother-in-law, said the DCP.
The next morning when he was informed about the killings, he pretended to be unaware of anything.
