Acting on the calls of locals from Paikpara's MIG housing on Raja Manindra Road, personnel from Tala police station went to the flat and found Anirban Basu living with the decomposed body of his mother Meera Basu late on Tuesday night, they said.
According to a senior officer of the Kolkata Police, Anirban, when questioned, could not recollect what happened to his mother or when he had last seen her.
Postmortem report suggested that the woman had died of cardiac arrest, at least five days ago, he said.
Meera's husband, who was a freelance photographer, died in 1997 since when their son was reportedly disturbed.
"Anirban is well educated but has been suffering from some psychological problem for quite some time. He has been sent to a mental hospital for treatment," the officer said.
