"Prima facie it appears to be a case of land dispute. However a case has been registered against named assailants and they would be nabbed shortly," SP City Manoj Sonkar said.
The four accused Bharto, Mahendra, Banwari and Roop Kishor attacked Mathura Tehsil worker, Ram Kishan (38) with iron rods near BSA College in Kotwali area and fled, police said.
Ram Kishan was rushed to nearby private hospital where doctors declared him dead, according to the police report.
Before the court proceedings today, the assailants had threatened to eliminate Kishan's nephew Bablu who had gone to the court on his behalf.
On being informed that assailants had threatened to eliminate Bablu, Kishan was on his way to rescue Bablu when he was attacked by the accused, the police report said.
