A man suspected of killing his wife and cousin in north Delhi's Timarpur allegedly committed suicide in his native village in Kanpur in the early hours today, police said.
The body of Mohit (25) was found hanging from the ceiling of a temporary structure when a team of Delhi Police reached his village to arrest him in connection with the twin murders, they added.
According to Jatin Narwal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), a strip of sulphas tablets was found from the spot and there was a mark on his wrist which indicated that he had tried to slit his wrist. However, no suicide note was found.
Yesterday, the bodies of Mohit's wife Premlata (28) and his cousin Sonia (24) were found with their throats slit at the latter's house.
Mohit was Sonia's father Raj Kumar Sharma's nephew.
It was suspected that Mohit was involved in the killings as he was missing.
The two women were first attacked with a screwdriver and then their throats were slit with a kitchen knife, the police had said.
Mohit had fled from Delhi and reached his native village in Kanpur late last night. A team of Delhi Police also left for his village to look for him.
This morning, when the police team reached the fields in his village, they found his body hanging from the ceiling of a structure there.
Mohit's family claimed that they were unaware that he was in the village .
Police also seized a liquor bottle and some glasses from the spot. They also found Mohit's blood-stained clothes and his wife's cell phone from the place where he allegedly hanged himself, the police said.
During investigation, the police found that Mohit and Premlata were having trouble in their marriage.
Premlata's father told the police that Mohit would pick up fights with his daughter over trivial issues. Her father also told the police that Mohit accused Premlata of talking to other men on phone.
It is suspected that during one such fight, Mohit killed his wife in a fit of rage. However, it is still not clear why he killed his cousin.
"He might have killed Sonia since she was a witness or it is possible that she was killed while trying to intervene between the couple," said another officer, privy to the probe.
